NBA elects new president
The Nigerian Bar Association has elected
a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Mahmoud Abubakar, to succeed its
incumbent President, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), whose two-year tenure
ends this month.
Mahmoud, a former Kano State
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, emerged the winner of the
NBA election conducted through electronic voting between Saturday, July
 30 and Sunday, July 31, 2016.
In the election report published on its
website on Monday, the NBA said Mahmoud polled 3,055 out of available
5,439 votes to emerge winner ahead of his opponent, Chief Joe-Kyari
Gadzama, who polled 2,384 votes.
It was the first time that the NBA would
be conducting its election through electronic voting. Also, as opposed
to its former method of branch delegates voting system, the voting in
2016 was open to all lawyers in the country.
Mahmoud is expected to be sworn in this
month as 28th President of the NBA to steer the association’s ship for
the next two years.
