 Paul confronts certain ascetic false teachers who believed that sex in 
marriage and eating foods freely were at best for second-class 
Christianity. Paul called these false teachings demonic. <br />

First, the false teaching, as Paul summarizes it in verses 1–2 and the first part of verse 3:<br />

<blockquote>
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart 
from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings
 of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are 
seared, who <em>forbid marriage</em> and <em>require abstinence from foods</em> . . .<br />

</blockquote>
Then, Paul’s response, starting in the middle of verse 3:<br />

<blockquote>
. . . that [that is, the marriage and the food] God created to be 
received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For 
everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it 
is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God 
and prayer.<br />

</blockquote>
For those who know the <em>truth</em> of the gospel and who revel in the <em>word of God</em> concerning the all-satisfying glory of God, and who <em>pray</em>
 (Hallowed be your name!) and dedicate everything to God, the sex of 
marriage and the pleasures of food are made holy — that is, they are set
 apart from the sinful use of the world and made pure and precious and 
beautiful by participation in the goodness of God. <br />

<h2>
Unembarrassed by the Bible</h2>
We are not supposed to be embarrassed by the forthright sensuality of
 sexual love in marriage as the Bible portrays it — sometimes 
graphically. <br />

<blockquote>
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a
 lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with
 delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be 
intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an 
adulteress? For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he 
ponders all his paths. (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Prov 5.18–21" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Prov%205.18%E2%80%9321" target="_blank">Proverbs 5:18–21</a>) <br />

It is no shame that “a man’s ways are before the Lord” as her breasts
 fill him at all times with delight. This is why God made her that way 
and him that way. In fact, that this delight in her is “before” the Lord
 — in the presence of the Lord — points to the truth that all our joy in
 what God has made is meant to be a delight in God. There is something 
of his glory in all the glories of the world. <br />

We are not meant to revel in his creation <em>instead of</em> him or <em>more than</em>
 in him but because of him, and because there is something of him in all
 that is good and beautiful. The heavens are telling the glory of God. 
We are to see it. And worship him. So it is with the breasts of our 
wives. The breasts are telling the glory of God, the goodness of God, 
the beauty of God, and more. We are to see it. And worship him.<br />

<h2>
Let the Song Stun You</h2>
The Song of Solomon is in the Bible, among other reasons, to make 
sure that we take seriously the exquisite physical pleasures between a 
bride and a groom as a picture of Christ and his Church. The point is 
not that we nullify the physical pleasures of this Song by seeing it as a
 full-color image of <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Eph 5.22–33" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%205.22%E2%80%9333" target="_blank">Ephesians 5:22–33</a>.
 The point is that we let the Song stun us that God would design such a 
relationship between man and woman — from the beginning — as the image 
of the covenant-keeping pleasures between Christ and his church.<br />

<blockquote>
Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, that graze 
among the lilies. Until the day breathes and the shadows flee, I will go
 away to the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense. You are 
altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you. (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Song 4.5–7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Song%204.5%E2%80%937" target="_blank">Song 4:5–7</a>) <br />

Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle. Your neck is
 like an ivory tower. Your eyes are pools in Heshbon, by the gate of 
Bath-rabbim. Your nose is like a tower of Lebanon, which looks toward 
Damascus. Your head crowns you like Carmel, and your flowing locks are 
like purple; a king is held captive in the tresses. <br />

How beautiful and pleasant you are, O loved one, with all your 
delights! Your stature is like a palm tree, and your breasts are like 
its clusters. I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its 
fruit. Oh may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, and the scent 
of your breath like apples, and your mouth like the best wine. <br />

It goes down smoothly for my beloved, gliding over lips and teeth. (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Song 7.3–10" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Song%207.3%E2%80%9310" target="_blank">Song 7:3–10</a>) <br />

This is part of what Paul had in mind in <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Tim 4.3–5" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Tim%204.3%E2%80%935" target="_blank">1 Timothy 4:3–5</a>,
 when he said, “God created [food and sex] to be received with 
thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. . . . It is made 
holy by the word of God and prayer.” Sex is for “those who believe and 
know the truth.” <br />

<h2>
The Pleasures of Sex Are for Christians</h2>
We might lose sight of this, since Hollywood has ripped the curtains 
off the sacred marriage bed and turned a luxuriant, holy pleasure into a
 cheap spectator sport. We might be tempted to think that, since sex is 
so sinfully misused and is so universally undermining to the 
all-satisfying beauty of Christ’s holiness, maybe we Christians should 
have nothing to do with it.<br />

Paul says the opposite. It is the world that has stolen what belongs 
to believers. Sex belongs to Christians. Because sex belongs to God. 
“God created it to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe 
and know the truth.” If it is used by those who do not believe and know 
the truth, it is prostituted. They have exchanged the glory of God for 
images. They have torn sex from its God-appointed place in the orbit of 
marriage. But they do not know what they are doing. And the price they 
will pay in this life and the next is incalculable. <br />

The pleasures of sex are meant for believers. They are designed for 
their greatest expression by the children of God. He saves his richest 
gifts for his children. And as we enjoy his gift of sex, we say, by our 
covenant faithfulness to our spouse, that God is greater than sex. And 
the pleasures of sex are themselves an overflow of God’s own goodness. 
This pleasure is less than what we will know fully in him at his right 
hand. And in it, we taste something of his very exquisiteness.<br />

When the preciousness and pleasures of Christ are supreme, all dimensions of sex, including <em>experiencing</em> pleasure, <em>seeking</em> pleasure, <em>giving</em> pleasure, and <em>abstinence from</em> pleasure, will all find their biblical and Christ-exalting expression.<br />

Everything God made is good. Everything is for the sake of worship 
and love. And this is true both in the feasting and the fasting. In the 
sexual union and in abstinence. Sex is made for the glory of Christ — 
for the Christ-exalting glory of covenant-keeping faithfulness in 
marriage, and for the glory of Christ-exalting chastity in singleness. 
It is always good. Sex is always an occasion to show that the Giver of 
sex is better than sex.

older, with his head in his hands and looking stunned.</div>

I love premarital counseling. It’s a nice respite from what is so 
often crisis response. Instead, I get to see two incredibly happy people
 excited for the day when they shall become one flesh. My job in these 
sessions is to listen, laugh, and challenge. <br />

I typically do three sessions. The first two are certainly a joy, but the last one, if I’m honest, is my favorite.<br />

 a little bit more realistic picture of what life will be like after the
 cake has been cut and toasts have been given. To this end, I have at 
least one private meeting with each person where I ask this question, 
“What are you going to do the first time you begin to feel about someone
 else the way you feel now about your significant other?”<br />

<h2>
A Ring Won’t Restrain Sin</h2>
It’s a nasty question, I admit, and one that most couples don’t see 
coming. The very idea that they could begin to have amorous feelings 
toward someone other than their betrothed — at any point in their lives —
  seems like an assault on their love and their moral fiber. But don’t 
be deceived. Putting a ring on your finger does nothing to restrain the 
rebellion that is in your heart. According to <em>The Truth About Cheating</em> by M. Gary Neuman, nearly seventy percent of men who had an affair thought that they would never do such a thing. <br />

Further, those who affirmed the statement, “I would never cheat on my
 spouse,” were at an exponentially greater risk of actually having an 
affair later in life. Satan would love for you to believe that you are 
invulnerable to some category of sin because then you will stop 
protecting your soul from its terrible effects. As <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Jer 17.9" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Jer%2017.9" target="_blank">Jeremiah 17:9</a>
 puts it, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately 
sick; who can understand it?” Or as Robert Murray McCheyne once wrote, 
“The seed of every sin known to man is in my heart.”<br />

<h2>
Warning Signs</h2>
Once the indignity of the question has begun to dissipate, we can move on to the second step: <em>Have a plan</em>.
 People rarely (only six percent, according to Neuman) just “fall into 
bed together.” The vast majority of time when an affair is consummated, 
it is done with someone that they’ve known at least a month and with 
whom they have had multiple interactions. That means that there is time 
to notice the warning signs. And time to do something about them well in
 advance of something egregious. Some of those signs may include,<br />

<ul>
<li>you really look forward to seeing this person</li>
<li>you are willing to go out of your way to make sure that you have regular interactions with them</li>
<li>you rearrange your calendar to find ways to sneak more time in with that person (like early morning 
meetings, long lunches, late evenings, and more)</li>
<li>you are growing increasingly critical of your spouse, especially as compared to that other someone special</li>
<li>you are looking for reasons to be out of the presence of your spouse</li>
<li>your recreational life becomes more and more exclusive of your spouse</li>
<li>your desire to be intimate, physically or emotionally, with your spouse is dwindling.</li>
</ul>
What happens if you notice some of these warning signs in your life? Here are three steps, among others.<br />

<h2>
1. Cut the relationship off.</h2>
If you can cut them out of your life completely, do it. But sometimes
 because of work, church, or family, that is difficult or impossible. At
 that point, you need to cut them off from anything resembling emotional
 intimacy. <br />

Emotional intimacy is the lifeblood of an affair. Sometimes people 
disclose their feelings for one another hoping that it will help keep 
them from acting, but all it really does is provide gasoline for a 
budding romantic flame. You want to starve, not feed, that fire.  <br />

<h2>
2. Get help.</h2>
Find someone who will encourage Christian growth in your covenant 
relationship. One of the worst things that can happen is to find a 
friend who is actually sympathetic to any wandering tendencies. More 
than three-quarters of men that had an affair had a friend who did the 
same. As <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Prov 13.20" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Prov%2013.20" target="_blank">Proverbs 13:20</a>
 states, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of
 fools will suffer harm.” Or as Paul states it more bluntly, “Do not be 
deceived, ‘Bad company ruins good morals’” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Cor 15.33" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Cor%2015.33" target="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:33</a>).  <br />

It’s best if this friend or even mentor can be found in advance. I 
often encourage my premarital participants to identify in advance who 
the person is that they could call in the middle of the night and 
confess, “I think my heart is beginning to wander.” More importantly, 
let that person know who they are, and allow them to check in with you 
about this issue from time to time.<br />

<h2>
3. Renew your commitment to a happy marriage.</h2>
Contrary to what movies and songs often lead us to believe, only 
around ten percent of those that cheated did so with someone they 
considered “more attractive” than their spouse. Men and women who have 
an affair often do so because of emotional needs rather than physical 
ones. For men, it is usually the need to feel appreciated, respected, 
and valued that leads to an affair; whereas for women, it’s the drive to
 feel heard, loved, and cherished.<br />

When you perceive a lack of these in your own marriage, be willing to
 pray together, go to counseling, read books, attend workshops and 
seminars and conferences —whatever it takes in order to rekindle your 
own passion in your marriage. <br />

Most importantly, be willing to own your own mistakes, and try to 
display something of the love of God to the one whom you made that 
promise in the first place. As Ligon Duncan says, “People don’t just 
fall out of love; they fall out of repentance and forgiveness.”<br />

In the midst of all the prep for that special day, it’s never too 
early to plan for the day when it could all hang in the balance. 
Recognize your own propensity to sin, have a plan to deal with it the 
moment it rears its ugly head, and stand strong in your commitment to 
rejoice in the wife (spouse) of your youth (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Prov 5.18" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Prov%205.18" target="_blank">Proverbs 5:18</a>).

is rampant in our tech-savvy culture, and sadly it’s little different 
among Christians. I’m in weekly conversations with college guys at our 
church who are fighting hard against lust and porn addiction. <br />

It’s interesting for me to hear how people talk about their struggle.
 Often when they share, they frame it in terms of “how long it’s been” 
since their last encounter with porn. The room rejoices with those who 
haven’t had an incident in a while, and we spout off advice to the ones 
who have. You can almost see the ranking system build before your eyes: 
The most recent sinner cowers on the bottom with the lowest score, while
 the one with the longest record of abstinence stands tall at the top. <br />

But we may have it more wrong than we think. Why? Because our actions don’t always reveal our hearts. <br />

<h2>
<i>Dirty Dishes</i></h2>
If you were looking for the most <em>moral</em> people of Christ’s 
day, you would look no further than the Pharisees — fasting, tithing, 
praying, obeying. Yet when Jesus has a chance to speak to them he says 
this: <br />

<i>“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the 
outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and 
self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup 
and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.” </i>(<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Matt 23.25–26" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2023.25%E2%80%9326" target="_blank">Matthew 23:25–26</a>) <br />

For these religious leaders, holiness was only skin-deep. Their deeds
 were moral, but their hearts were evil. Jesus understood that what you 
could <em>see</em> in a person’s life often says very little about the condition of a person’s <em>spiritual</em>
 life. If God was merely after behavior modification, Jesus would have 
praised the Pharisees. Instead, they received some of Jesus’s harshest 
words of all. <br />

One way to tell if you’re measuring success by an outer-cleanness 
versus an inner-cleanness is if you obsess over how many days it’s been 
since you last sinned. That mentality presupposes that your issue is one
 primarily of behavior, and not of the heart. But God always seeks a 
change deeper than our behavior. <br />

<h2>
Superficial Celebrations</h2>
This isn’t just a porn issue. We see this in other areas. For 
example, it’s not necessarily grounds for celebration if an obese person
 loses a hundred pounds. On a superficial level we can certainly say 
that proper diet and exercise is better for their health, and therefore a
 good thing. But is it worth celebrating if that weight loss was 
motivated by vanity? Or if it produced a heart of self-righteousness or 
self-worship? Perhaps they dealt the decisive blow to their gluttony, 
only to have narcissism sprout in its place. The new state of the person
 might be worse than the first! <br />

The Puritan John Owen said it well when speaking on the fight against
 sin: <i>“He that changes pride for worldliness, sensuality for Pharisaism,
 vanity in himself to the contempt of others, let him not think that he 
has mortified the sin that he seems to have left. He has changed his 
master, but is a servant still.” </i><br />

<h2>
Obedience from the Heart</h2>
If it’s true that God looks at the heart first, what are some markers of that <em>inner</em>-cleanness he desires beyond the changes in our behavior? <br />

<ol>
<li>A sense of neediness and dependence on the grace of God. 
Christianity is nothing if not the religion of the helpless. The 
godliest thing any of us can do in our fight against sin is to admit we 
cannot fight against sin on our own. We need the power of the Holy 
Spirit working within us. If you feel defeated in your struggle against 
lust, let that sense of defeat push you further into the arms of your 
strong Savior today, and push you to lean on his strength and help, 
again. </li>
<li>A steady gaze at Christ as our treasure and satisfaction. Most of
 our efforts in sanctification fall short of seeing Christ this way. But
 Scripture is clear: There is no legitimate conquering of sin without a 
pursuit of Christ in its place (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="2 Tim 2.22" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Tim%202.22" target="_blank">2 Timothy 2:22</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Rom 13.14" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Rom%2013.14" target="_blank">Romans 13:14</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="John 6.35" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%206.35" target="_blank">John 6:35</a>). Jesus is a good meal for our soul. The battle for purity is really a battle to delight in God. </li>
</ol>
Don’t mistake what I’m saying. God absolutely wants external, visible
 life-change: <i>“[Christ] gave himself for us to redeem us from all 
lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession 
who are zealous for good works”</i> (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Titus 2.14" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Titus%202.14" target="_blank">Titus 2:14</a>). But a change of behavior is only God-glorifying if it is motivated by a change of heart. <br />

As you war against your flesh, as you fight against lust and 
addiction, as you counsel others in the battle, aim higher and deeper 
than outer moral conformity. Feel your inability to produce lasting life
 change apart from the work of God’s Spirit. Pray for a heart that is so
 enamored with the beauty of Christ that it despises the temptations of 
sin. Win the inner victory with Christ’s help, and the external 
victories will not be far off.<br />

God gave man and woman the joy and pleasure of sexual relations within 
the bounds of marriage, and the Bible is clear about the importance of 
maintaining sexual purity within the boundaries of that union between 
man and wife (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Eph 5.31" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%205.31" target="_blank">Ephesians 5:31</a>).
 Humans are well aware of the pleasing effect of this gift from God but 
have expanded it well beyond marriage and into virtually any 
circumstance. The secular world’s philosophy of “if it feels good, do 
it” pervades cultures, especially in the West, to the point where sexual
 purity is seen as archaic and unnecessary.<br />  
Yet look at what God says about sexual purity. “You should be 
sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you 
should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and 
honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God.
 . . . For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Thess 4.3–5" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Thess%204.3%E2%80%935" target="_blank">1 Thessalonians 4:3–5</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Thessalonians 4.7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Thessalonians%204.7" target="_blank">7</a>). This passage outlines God’s reasons for calling for sexual purity in the lives of His children.<br />  
First, we are “sanctified,” and for that reason we are to avoid sexual 
immorality. The Greek word  translated “sanctified” means literally 
“purified, made holy, consecrated [unto God].” As Christians, we are to 
live a purified life because we have been made holy by the exchange of 
our sin for the righteousness of Christ on the cross and have been made 
completely new creations in Christ (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="2 Cor 5.17–21" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Cor%205.17%E2%80%9321" target="_blank">2 Corinthians 5:17–21</a>).
 Our old natures, with all their impurities, sexual and otherwise, have 
died, and now the life we live, we live by faith in the One who died for
 us (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Gal 2.20" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Gal%202.20" target="_blank">Galatians 2:20</a>).
 To continue in sexual impurity (fornication) is to deny that, and doing
 so is, in fact, a legitimate reason to question whether we have ever 
truly been born again. Sanctification, the process by which we become 
more and more Christlike, is an essential evidence of the reality of our
 salvation.<br />  
We also see in <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Thess 4.3–5" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Thess%204.3%E2%80%935" target="_blank">1 Thessalonians 4:3–5</a>
 the necessity of controlling our bodies. When we give in to sexual 
immorality, we give evidence that the Holy Spirit is not filling us 
because we do not possess one of the fruits of the Spirit—self-control. 
All believers display the fruit of the Spirit (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Gal 5.22–23" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Gal%205.22%E2%80%9323" target="_blank">Galatians 5:22–23</a>)
 to a greater or lesser degree depending on whether or not we are 
allowing the Spirit to have control. Uncontrolled “passionate lust” is a

 not of the Spirit. So controlling our lusts and living sexually pure

 in repentance, healing, restoration, and recovery. Most of all, it 
fails to address the issues that underlie porn use. Often, Christian 
advice either has its head in the clouds of theology and biblical 
references, or is a list of superficial how-tos, and gets knocked 
beneath the sand of real life — of failure, and the struggle to hope. 
How is the gospel relevant to failing and trying again? And failing and 
trying again? And failing and trying again? <br />

We too often allow unattainable ideals to dictate what we allow 
ourselves to say — the issues we allow ourselves to address with the 
congregation, with the struggler, with the mirror. Are we allowed to 
talk about what Christ can do (and what we can do) right after 
pornographic indulgence? Or do we look to the clouds and hope for the 
best? “Why think about how God meets you in the midst of failure? You 
shouldn’t even be in an ‘after pornography’ situation.” But often many 
are and because God can and does act in the moment of regret.<br />

It is often in the moment <em>after</em> the closed door, the 
darkness, the screen-light, the hidden act — after pornography 
indulgence — that Satan spins his most eloquent web: menacing patterns 
of thinking; bargaining with a disapproving and distant God; twisting us
 in on ourselves in self-hatred. It is in the moment <em>after</em> 
pornography indulgence that Satan does his finest work. It is in this 
moment that we need God to do his finest saving. Here are some specific 
ways to search for grace the moment after the dark act of pornography 
indulgence:<br />

<h2>
1. Know your Enemy.</h2>
As soon as you indulge, you either plunge into self-hatred, or into 
self-avoidance. Satan is satisfied either way. Both paths believe his 
accusations (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Matt 16.23" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2016.23" target="_blank">Matthew 16:23</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="2 Cor 7.10" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Cor%207.10" target="_blank">2 Corinthians 7:10</a>). Recognize that you have a powerful personal agent who is singularly focused on your destruction (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Job 1.7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Job%201.7" target="_blank">Job 1:7</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Eph 2.2" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%202.2" target="_blank">Ephesians 2:2</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Jude 1.19" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Jude%201.19" target="_blank">Jude 1:19</a>).
 Every experience you have — your thoughts, your hatreds, your impulses,
 your emotions, your plans, your ideas — must take into account that 
Satan is at work. The sooner you forget that, the easier it is to 
believe hidden, subversive, subtle, destructive lies. When Jesus tells 
the Pharisees that their father is the devil — the great liar — it is of
 course no surprise that <em>they don’t know that</em>. Satan wants them to forget that he is their father, because evil gains power when it is forgotten (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="John 8.44" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%208.44" target="_blank">John 8:44</a>).
 Don’t forget: After you indulge, you are still mid-battle with a 
tenacious, evil person bent on stealing your life, and he has not yet 
gotten it.<br />

<h2>
2. Fight self-hatred.</h2>
There is no question: Pornography is the twisted manipulation of 
innocence for the raw crave of erotic appetite. To have a grieved 
conscience is a good thing. But when Judas realized “I have sinned by 
betraying innocent blood,” it is not surprising that “he departed, and 
he went and hanged himself” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Matt 27.4–5" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2027.4%E2%80%935" target="_blank">Matthew 27:4–5</a>).
 It’s a common feeling: to want to punish ourselves for betraying the 
innocent. In twisting innocence, we twist ourselves. It is not a 
surprise that suicide rates are high among pornography users. “I’m not 
as good as Christian preachers and bloggers want me to be.” To warp 
human dignity, in the end, only warps the user more — psychologically 
deforming to self-hating; contorting into self-disgust. We abhor, 
criticize, despise, and detest ourselves. Wallowing in self-deprecation 
and feeling like paying penance to God for sin is a sad and ironclad 
torture. It is false, and it is a wicked oppression. But grace <em>does</em> have a word on this.<br />

It is no wonder David uses such deeply physical metaphors when he 
pleads with God for grace over sexual sin: “blot out my transgressions,”
 “wash me,” “cleanse me,”  “in sin did my mother conceive me,” “purge 
me,” “wash me” (again), “blot out my iniquities,” “create in me a clean 
heart.” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.1" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.1" target="_blank">Psalm 51:1</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.2" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.2" target="_blank">2</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.5" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.5" target="_blank">5</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.7" target="_blank">7</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.9" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.9" target="_blank">9</a>, <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.10" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.10" target="_blank">10</a>).
 It’s a simple, roaring plea: “It’s in me. Get it OUT!” “Stop me.” “I 
hate it.” “I hate me.” “Bleach me.” God gives us a liturgy of sorrow and
 hope stretched out in the same howl. Fight, with David. Scream that, 
with David. Replace the groan of human self-hatred with an unbroken war 
cry of divine love. <br />

If you are tempted to wallow, don’t let your (good) intuitive hatred 
of sin lead you to hate yourself. Be patient with yourself, because God 
is patient. He is fighting for your life (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Gen 32.24" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Gen%2032.24" target="_blank">Genesis 32:24</a>; <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="John 10.10" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2010.10" target="_blank">John 10:10</a>).
 He has not forgotten you. He has not left you. Keep fighting with him. 
Keep gasping for the air of divine life — the Life-Giving Spirit (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Cor 15.45" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Cor%2015.45" target="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:45</a>).<br />

<h2>
3. Fight the haze.</h2>
Right after indulgence, a haze kicks in. Jesus knows. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Matt 5.8" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%205.8" target="_blank">Matthew 5:8</a>).
 Purity is a feast on luminescent virtue. What is impurity? It is 
feasting that becomes self-isolated, avoiding of God and man and self, 
numbed, dazed, deadened, desensitized. Sexual impurity induces a 
spiritual cataract. Again, the feeling is common — browser history 
cleared, slogging through the rest of the day, lumbering from task to 
task, from person to person — meaningless, personless, passionless. This
 experience is integrated into the fabric of pornography indulgence.<br />

There’s usually nothing to be done, if we’re honest, except ride the wave — the muddle, the daze. Keep praying (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Eph 6.18" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%206.18" target="_blank">Ephesians 6:18</a>).
 Keep gasping for air. Stay awake. Keep breathing. Morning mercies can 
be the emotional reset button we need when we spend our daily emotional 
cache on pornography (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Lam 3.22–24" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Lam%203.22%E2%80%9324" target="_blank">Lamentations 3:22–24</a>). The lamenter is gasping. He prays what he cannot do. “The Lord is my portion . . . therefore I will hope in him.” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Lam 3.24" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Lam%203.24" target="_blank">Lamentations 3:24</a>).
 Really? Will you hope in him? Prayer is an act of hope. The prayer is 
the lamenter’s portion of the Lord’s work. Keep taking a step forward. 
Keep taking a breath. Without repeated indulgence, the haze will 
eventually wear off.<br />

<h2>
4. Guard others.</h2>
Pornography is a training session in the skill of using others for personal pleasure. Just <em>be aware</em>
 that you are now inclined to use people in close relationship the same 
way you use those in pornography — with selfish motive, with neglectful 
attitude, unrepentantly. Pornography puts relational blinders on us — it
 deeply impedes our ability to love others well. So, the best course of 
action is to walk as if we have physical blinders on: Tread slowly, and 
assume that we are currently very vulnerable and prone to treat those 
around us as subhuman. After indulgence, it is vital to keep in mind 
that those not on the screen deserve the respect and dignity that we 
just failed to show those on the screen.<br />

Pornography soothes its users into a drama, a character, a story with
 a script and lines and actions: one person for pleasing, one person for
 being pleased; one person making sacrifices, another receiving 
sacrifices; one subhuman, one god. It takes self-control to remember 
that pornography is a false story — to fight the false drama which 
pornography gives to us, we must actively think less of ourselves and 
more of others: to remember human dignity, the love of Christ for those 
around us, our not-God-ness. The Spirit works in us to keep the flesh 
from ruling us (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Gal 5.17" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Gal%205.17" target="_blank">Galatians 5:17</a>) — the Keeper protects others from the consequences of our thinking that we are God.<br />

<h2>
5. Confess to a friend.</h2>
Confess sin to a friend who will not excuse you, but equally as 
important, who will not crush you. Sometimes, when looking for help to 
get up after pornography indulgence (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Prov 24.16" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Prov%2024.16" target="_blank">Proverbs 24:16</a>),
 others only push back down. Find the friend that gives hope that heals 
when they hear confession. The purpose of confession is “that you may be
 healed” and “pray for one another” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="James 5.16" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/James%205.16" target="_blank">James 5:16</a>). Of course, the value of “the prayer of a righteous person” is that it “has great power as it is working” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="James 5.16" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/James%205.16" target="_blank">James 5:16</a>). Power to do what? To “cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 John 1.9" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20John%201.9" target="_blank">1 John 1:9</a>).
 Confession to a friend (most appropriately, a same-gender friend) is 
not a barrier between the sinner and Christ, but a means of fixing 
brokenness. The wise sinner confesses to those who will not “crush the 
afflicted at the gate” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Prov 22.22" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Prov%2022.22" target="_blank">Proverbs 22:22</a>) nor “call evil good and good evil” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Isa 5.20" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Isa%205.20" target="_blank">Isaiah 5:20</a>). Consider attending a regular Samson Society meeting in your area.<br />

<h2>
6. Use your clarity for good.</h2>
Yes, there might be a haze after indulgence. But there can also be a 
flood of clarity — the hindsight of regret. “When Judas . . . saw that 
Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Matt 27.3" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2027.3" target="_blank">Matthew 27:3</a>).
 Judas’s clarity took him down a wrong path. But you can use your 
clarity to get back on the right one. Likewise, Paul writes about 
Israel’s rebellion, “Now these things took place as examples for us, 
that we might not desire evil as they did” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Cor 10.6" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Cor%2010.6" target="_blank">1 Corinthians 10:6</a>). Sometimes, we desire evil anyway. And in that case, we serve as an example to ourselves.<br />

As Piper might say, “Don’t waste your regret.” Use it for God’s glory
 and your joy. Set up boundaries. Use the clarity that will surely fade 
before the next moment of temptation to build structures that will 
prevent this again. Go back and forth all you’d like on what structures 
are dumb and ineffective, and which are sustainable preventative 
measures — the basic truth is this: If you don’t have any formal 
structures set up to prevent you from looking at pornography in the 
future, it will absolutely, with 100% certainty, happen again. If you 
have no structures, you have no place to be picky — choose something. 
Here are some actions to choose from:<br />

<ul>
<li>Get <a href="http://www.covenanteyes.com/">Covenant Eyes</a> or <a href="http://x3watch.com/">X3Watch</a> for <em>all</em> your devices.</li>
<li>Don’t let a single unaccountable browser app remain on your iPhone.</li>
<li>Delete in-browser apps that allow backdoor access to unaccountable internet use.</li>
<li>Get a friend to lock the app download function on your phone so that
 your native browser is not an option, and you can’t download Google 
Chrome (the Covenant Eyes/X3 app will function as the browser).</li>
<li>Delete pictures you have saved.</li>
<li>Tell a friend about the backdoors and cheat-codes you have in your 
back pocket. If you don’t plan at all, you’re planning to fail. Nowhere 
is this truer than in the practical fight against pornography 
indulgence.</li>
</ul>
<h2>
7. Know your God.</h2>
Remember this: God loves you so, so much. He is unsettled by us (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Gen 6.6" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Gen%206.6" target="_blank">Genesis 6:6</a>), and brokenhearted with us, and powerfully <em>for</em> you (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 34.17–19" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2034.17%E2%80%9319" target="_blank">Psalm 34:17–19</a>). The haze can block us from God: “The stupid man cannot know; the fool cannot understand” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 92.6" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2092.6" target="_blank">Psalm 92:6</a>). But even when we cannot see him, even when we fail to obey him, let us pray: <em>God, frustrate our plans to disobey</em> (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Neh 4.15" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Neh%204.15" target="_blank">Nehemiah 4:15</a>), and “no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Job 42.2" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Job%2042.2" target="_blank">Job 42:2</a>). More than anything: “God, help us to cast all our anxieties on you, because you care for us” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="1 Pet 5.6–7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Pet%205.6%E2%80%937" target="_blank">1 Peter 5:6–7</a>).<br />

He does not abandon the sinner. He does not depart from the indulger.
 Wait in his love. “Build yourselves up . . . in the Holy Spirit”:  
“keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord 
Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life” (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Jude 1.20–21" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Jude%201.20%E2%80%9321" target="_blank">Jude 1:20–21</a>).
 Know the difference between the God-mask Satan would wear to deceive 
you: disgusted, distant, unavailable, disinterested, and remember the 
face of your real God: loving, patient, working, unsurprised, 
unrelenting, unwavering in his grasp on you. He won’t let you go.

There is a kind of joy in repentance. I say “a kind of” because 
repentance is also arduous, humbling, exacting. Think of Jean Valjean 
writhing in agony during <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP31L6AhB3M">his soliloquy</a>: “<i>I feel my shame inside me like a knife!</i>” Or Eustace Clarence Scrubb <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Voyage-Dawn-Treader-Chronicles-Narnia/dp/0064405028?tag=desigod06-20">being “un-dragoned”</a> by Aslan: “<i>it hurt worse than anything I’ve ever felt.</i>”<br />

It can seem strange that repentance can produce <i>both</i> grief 
and joy — that David’s bones can be “crushed” and yet “rejoice.” But 
this is consistent with the flavor of the gospel, which achieves life 
through death, joy through suffering, good through evil. We might say 
that repentance is to joy what Good Friday is to Easter — that necessary
 path of agonizing, self-abasing death by which alone we emerge into 
light and freedom beyond what we could have ever imagined.<br />
How can we seek joy in the midst of bone-crushing repentance? Here are four (not necessarily chronological) steps.<br />
<h2>
<span style="color: #741b47;">1. Fully Acknowledge the Weight of Your Sin.</span></h2>
Before David asks for joy in <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.8" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.8" target="_blank">Psalm 51:8</a> and <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Psalm 51.12" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2051.12" target="_blank">51:12</a>,
 he acknowledges the weight of his sin: <i>“Against you, you only, have I 
sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your 
verdict and justified when you judge”</i> (<a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.4" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.4" target="_blank">Psalm 51:4</a>). The joy of repentance flows directly out of its grief; there is no path to Sunday morning except through Friday afternoon. <br />
Thus in repentance, we must fully acknowledge the weight of our sin; 
we must own the staggering cost that held Christ on that cross; we must 
face squarely, without excuse or evasion, the depths of our guilt before
 a holy God. <br />
This means, first, that we measure our sins by God, rather than mere 
human factors — just as David prays, “against you only have I sinned,” 
even though he is repenting of sins more directly committed against 
Bathsheba and Uriah. And it means, second, that we agree with God’s 
judgment against our sin, and even join him in it — just as David prays,
 <i>“you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.”</i>
It might seem strange to think that joy can come from such a humbling, 
bone-crushing experience. But in reality, it is the only path to true 
joy. There is no <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.8" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.8" target="_blank">Psalm 51:8</a> rejoicing without a prior <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.4" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.4" target="_blank">Psalm 51:4</a> acknowledgement.<br />

<span style="color: #741b47;">2. Boldly Claim the Promises of Grace.</span></h2>
In the gospel, the sins we repent of are already forgiven before we 
even repent. We might still have to bear the consequences of our sins 
for a time, and perhaps even the Lord’s gracious discipline. But because
 of the justifying blood of Christ, our status in the eyes of heaven 
never waxes and wanes with the ups and downs of our sanctification. When
 Christ comes into our lives, we are fully, eternally, and unchangeably <i>forgiven</i>.
 
This enables us to repent with a kind of glad abandon. Repentance is 
like saying you’re sorry to a friend after he has already run to you, 
embraced you, kissed you, and clung to you. There is nothing to hide, 
and nothing to fear. <br />
The gospel also enables us to lay hold of God’s promises for 
forgiveness and change while we are repenting. David’s prayer, <i>“let me 
hear joy and gladness” </i>in <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.8" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.8" target="_blank">Psalm 51:8</a> is of one piece with his prayer, “<i>wash me, and I will be whiter than snow”</i> in <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Ps 51.7" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2051.7" target="_blank">Psalm 51:7</a>. <br />
Repentance is like a medicine with a bitter taste that nonetheless 
heals and nourishes and even consoles in our stomach. If we know the 
medicine will work, we don’t so much mind the bitter taste. In the 
gospel, the medicine works. <br />

<span style="color: #741b47;">3. Involve Other People as Appropriate.</span></h2>
Repentance is first and foremost a vertical matter <i>coram Deo</i> (before the face of God). But sincere repentance cannot help but spill out onto the horizontal plane as well. <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="James 5.16" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/James%205.16" target="_blank">James 5:16</a> envisions one way it could happen:<i> “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” </i><br />
When we repent before others — in an appropriate context, and in a non-showy way — James says it brings <i>healing</i>. It frees us from our pride, it edifies others, and it puts the power of the gospel on public display.<br />
If you are battling a habitual sin and you have not held yourself 
accountable in any way, be honest with yourself: You might feel badly 
about your sin, but you are not actually repenting of it. Repentance is 
more than remorse — it means <i>change</i>. <br />
Raise the stake in your repentance by involving others. Risk the 
bone-crushing humiliation of total honesty. It may be your path to 
freedom and joy. <br />

<span style="color: #741b47;">4. Meditate on Christ’s Intercession for You.</span></h2>
Christ’s heavenly intercession does not atone for our sin, but it 
applies the benefits of his once-for-all atonement to us in our 
real-time struggles. As the Puritan theologian Stephen Charnock <a href="http://themelios.thegospelcoalition.org/article/the-voice-of-his-blood-christs-intercession-in-the-thought-of-stephen-charn">put it</a>:<i>
 “it is upon every sin he doth discharge this office, and by his 
interposition procures our pardon thousands of times, and preserves us 
from coming short of the full fruits of reconciliation at first obtained
 by him.”</i><br />
Christ’s intercession is an incredible help to finding joy in 
repentance. We all know what it is like to wallow in the guilt and shame
 of our sin, wondering if God has run out of patience. <a class="rtBibleRef" data-purpose="bible-reference" data-reference="Micah 7.8–9" data-version="esv" href="http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Micah%207.8%E2%80%939" target="_blank">Micah 7:8–9</a>
 seems to envision this kind of post-sin wallowing, and how Christ’s 
intercession functions as its answer: <i>“when I sit in darkness, the LORD 
will be a light to me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I
 have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes judgment
 for me.” </i><br />
When you are sitting in the darkness, all your bones crushed by the 
weight of sin and guilt, remember this: He is praying for you. With all 
the compassion of a father’s heart for a wayward prodigal, and with all 
the merits and rights of one who has paid the full penalty on your 
behalf, he is entertaining your case before the Father. It’s a 
staggering thought that the very one against whom you have sinned will 
plead your cause.<br />
Such an incredible love changes the tone of our repentance. It gives 
us gladness amidst the sorrow. It shines a light when we are sitting in 
the darkness. And it gives us hope that our broken bones can sing again.

while addressing newsmen shortly after meeting with the state’s Council 
of Ulama Consultative Forum in Gusau.</div>

He said the State House of Assembly 
would soon review its law number seven so that the culprits would be 
prosecuted under Shariah law if they were arrested.</div>

He said those who committed the offence 
did so to perpetrate their evil machinations and called on the public to
 pray that such evil doers did not succeed in their mission.</div>

The governor said the state had never 
experienced such situation especially since it launched the application 
of Shariah legal system in 2000.</div>

He said the state government would 
investigate the motive behind the act which came to public knowledge 
during the last Ramadan fast.</div>

He said while the state government would
 continue to encourage preaching against the act, it would also deploy 
security personnel to monitor possible places where the acts were 
carried out.</div>
